Blog Explained

"Face the MUSIC!!!" lives on!  This was a title I used to use way back when, back in the day when I would forcibly send emails out to people I worked with (with no "unsubscribe" option, that is), sharing music news and such.  Well, these days, I'm thankfully not doing that...I mean, it was the beginning of regular email communication, after all, and I admittedly didn't understand boundaries (yeah, I know...what can I say?).

Today, this blog is a place for me to list the endless number of albums that I've loved, adored, couldn't live without, have influenced me, greatly altered my life, changed my own personal writing, and so on.  It's sort of like the old Tower Records Desert Island Discs (DID) list except that was limited to only 10 choices, and I have a feeling mine will be very numerous.

It should be noted that these entries are not in any particular order.  Instead, it's more or less in the order I remember to write about them, so please don't look at them as a numerical ranking.  I'm also not supplying actual ratings because that's not what this list is about at all.  Lastly, be forewarned that you'll find releases in many different genres so please don't be put off if you happen to see, say, 5 prog rock albums in a row, thinking that the whole list is nothing but prog rock albums.  This list will encompass a ton of genres including rock, jazz, new age, world, etc.  You'll just have to dig through the list a bit to maybe find something that interests you.

So, why spend time on this?  Well, I do sometimes get asked what albums have influenced me, and what better way to answer that than to list those albums all in one place?  Also, for anyone who's looking to explore the many various avenues of music over the past 50+ years, hopefully everyone can find an album on this list that perhaps they've never even heard of...and it's a wonderful thing to share music.  Hopefully you'll also find something on this list that will be a welcomed addition into your life for your listening pleasure.  Enjoy!

Pink Floyd "Meddle"

Well, you may or may not be shocked that this was the next album I chose to tackle.  Now, keep in mind, this is not a "best album by..." blog by any means but more or less a list of albums that really bowled me over at some point in my life.  Most people would probably think that I'd opt for "Dark Side of the Moon" or maybe "The Wall", and in all fairness both of those will probably end up here at some point, but "Meddle" is the album that really knocked me out when I first heard it AND made me a Pink Floyd fan. The irony is that, until my sister made me go to a midnight showing of "The Wall", I actually thought Pink Floyd was a heavy metal band and didn't really give them the time of day.  I recall sitting in a class during freshman year of high school by some seniors who were diehard music fans, and I was telling them that I didn't listen to Floyd because I didn't like heavy metal.  I still remember the odd look that o...

Yes "Relayer"

I know I've been neglecting this list, mainly just due to having way too much going on all at the same time and also fighting various fires.  I'll try to get back into the groove again because I do think this blog is fairly important on some level. Ah, the band called Yes...  You knew I'd mention them sooner or later, no?!  Talk about a band that can conjure up all kinds of feelings, from pure elation to absolute disgust, and so on.  A friend of mine's wife has a very classic comment about why she can't stand Yes and the reason is apparently "every note with them has to be perfect".  It's certainly a strange thing to hold against a band, mind you, but it is a decent example of how the feelings on the band run the gamut including the mildly bizarre. Personally, I've always loved them although it certainly took me a bit of time when I was young to be able to get my head around their music in general.  Being a child of the 80's, like many in my ...

R.E.M. "Lifes Rich Pageant"

The year was 1985 and I was a mere 14 years old.  For my age, I was really into music, not only owning more albums than most people around me but I actually knew them inside and out.  I was also silently developing my singing skills by singing along to albums at full blast in my bedroom, assuredly driving my mother insane.  A bit to her credit, she never complained about my singing, just the volume of the music itself, by banging excessively on the adjoining wall while yelling "...turn it down!!!" At this point in time, I was looking for something new to listen to, different if you will.  It was around May of 1985 and I first chose to buy the Icicle Works self titled album from 1984.  This initially was a total clunker to me as I simply couldn't get into it.  Now, later on, this album would do a 180 degree turn and become one of the big albums for me but initially I couldn't get my head around it at all.  Because of this, two months later, I wen...
